I learned a similar lesson after eating some mango habenero wings at lunch a few weeks back. Got back to the office, got that sleepy after lunch feeling. Rubbed my eyes, and promptly ran screaming to the restroom. Good times....Good times....

Joe, great comment! I'm always on the fence with this kind of stuff. There's a part of me that would love to believe it's all aliens or the Illuminati or monkey robots from the future, etc. responsible for all the messed up things in the world. I do think oil, like our policies in places like Latin America and Afghanistan, is mired in years upon years of questionable behavior by our government. That said, I tend to think in cases like this, Occam's razor is probably best. And the simplest solution is probably something like they figured out how to extract the oil (= big money) long before they figured out a way to fix what happened if something went wrong... So they went for the easy dollar and probably didn't really care what happened if a big hole opened up and killed some lousy sea life.

Lou! Thanks for the post. Yes, for the most part, this was really just a thinly veiled jab at my colleagues in technology. You know me well. But, I guess to your other point, I think you are right, it's typically the UX owner's job (in conjunction with business and technology reps) to account for the majority of the user scenarios and to ensure that if there is failure, it's handled gracefully (helpful 404 pages, good error messages, etc.). But to this particular case (the oil spill) I really can't believe, knowing what I know about how laborious and painstaking the typical product specification review is in something even as benign as a sneaker web site, that there's not some line item in a manual someplace that says "In case of leak, do X."

I understand the point you are trying to make because i know you personally. Thus I know the specific point you are trying to convey and what you deal with in these meetings.

However, couldn't one make the argument that a UI and IA guru would think about the user scenarios. And that if it is an important scenario, it is account for in the design phase as a feature flow requirement. (This is putting aside any discussions about say "the purpose of tagging and sharing, who is going to do that and such...)

Here is my two cents...

As always you make for interesting reading. I have my theories on this whole subject some are plausible some are what some may say "not main stream".

According to the news when this incident first occurred there is a “fail safe” design for these rigs. However, they are not required or were not at the time this thing was built. So really it all came down to the almighty dollar.

Some conspiracy people have said this was sabotage by the environmentalist to stop offshore drilling. While others have said it was a conspiracy to raise oil prices. I take issue with these two conspiracies.

The environmentalists as whacky as they can be I do not think would go to such great lengths as to cause a catastrophe of this magnitude. In other words this does not benefit the greater good in my opinion.

As far as oil price conspiracy, while they may have gone up (and down) they certainly have not gone up to the high point they did over the past few years when virtually nothing happened to cause that price spike. Heck gasoline actually went down before Memorial Day weekend!

No my conspiracy is much more sinister. I believe (somewhat firmly I might add) that this was purposely done. I believe that this was for one reason and while there may be more reasons we have yet to see this one is the most clear to me.

I believe that this was done to increase our reliance on foreign oil. The oil rig blowing up and leaking plays to most everyone’s fears and with the Obama Administration allowing more off shore drilling it’s timing was perfect! The current administration did its job and said look we are doing something to help with our reliance on foreign oil by allowing more offshore drilling aren’t we great? Now with all this oil spewing into the ocean (from an offshore rig) the current administration has put a moratorium on more offshore drilling so now we have to rely on other countries again and the administration saves face because they have to be “responsible”. Please do not take this as an “Anti-Obama” thing. I am equally as sick with Republicans as I am Democrats they all suck.

I could go on but will spare my rant. Either way I am with you on this one. It is hard to believe that someone did not stop and say what are we going to do if this thing leaks? I mean really I even have a failsafe valve on my gas dryer so that if decide to disconnect my gas line from my dryer because I don’t know I want blow up my house the valve would stop the flow of gas. Seems pretty simple to me. Same principal should work with oil don’t you think?

If you are with me on the conspiracy train lets see what happens in the months to come as a result of this. See what they do and how it affects the consumer.

Remember mad man Joe says, “The crazier a conspiracy sounds, the less likely people are to believe it, the more likely it is to be true.”

You are missing the point here Jim - the reality is that the do have these meetings. And while you have idiots who worry about Hopi Indian time, and not about people who might be color blind (a more realistic situation) they worry about theft of oil by Aliens, and what color the pipe should be (Not important stuff) and forget to worry about leaks (again, a more realistic situation). Great post.
