Managing it all from Word Press
Posted by Toner under: UX .
Now that I’ve been sucked into the pit of despair that is Facebook (digital food fights, yippee!), the pressure to check, maintain and keep fresh all the sites that I have profiles on has become a little bit more than I want to deal with.
“What to do, what to do,” he says, thoughtfully scratching his chin…
Oh wait, I know, I can manage everything through WordPress. Well almost. Check this out:
MySpace/WordPress Cross Post
This handy little .php file allows you to cross-post blog entries between your WordPress and MySpace blogs. The current version will duplicate your entire post in MySpace. I’m actually running a slightly older version that just puts a “new post” announcement on your MySpace blog that then redirects traffic to your WordPress site. Which is fine for me. I’d rather have the traffic here than give it to Tom. One thing to keep in mind, every time you publish, (say you go in and edit something than re-post) it makes a duplicate announcement in MySpace.
WordBook
WordBook makes the the latest headlines from your WordPress Blog appear in Facebook. There are also apps that will let you manage comments and pictures between the two sites, but for now, I’m only using the blog one.
Ali Hassan’s AllConsuming Widget
I like to use AllConsuming to handle my required blog “reading, listening, watching, playing” info since they have everything in one place and is much easier than doing say, Shelfari for books and Lastfm for music, etc… They have widgets on their site, however, the one I use was done by a user, and is a little more customizable. Only problem I’m having now is formatting the text to wrap around the images, but, it’s mainly because I’m too lazy to dig into the CSS.
Twitter WordPress Widget
This simple Widget displays your latest Twitter messages. It allows a little more customization than the badges you can get from Twitter.
That’s pretty much it for what I’m using right now. Basically my main objective was to still be able to socialize/network but avoid feeding the giant market databases that I’m sure all our personal info is being funneled into.
There’s actually loads more you can do with Wordpress, much of which you can check out here:

Jim,
Thanks for the plug of the plug-in.
I’m glad that it’s working out for you.
Just a little clarification for your readers - the newest version of the plug-in will actually track the crossposted status of your stories, so if you edit a story after its original publication date you will not suffer from repeat postings of the story on MySpace (as warned about by Jim’s post above). Once it is posted to MySpace, it will never be posted again unintentionally.
You mention that the latest version will actually post the entire WordPress story to your MySpace blog, which is true, but it also allows the option of the simple notification system as well, giving you the choice of driving traffic to your WordPress blog (as you, Jim, have chosen, and I myself use as well) or simply putting all the goods on MySpace.
Hope that the code keeps serving you well!
Best,
-Roderick

Just wanted to give you a heads-up. The newest version of the MySpace Crossposter is now available, and the changes are many.
Everything is contained in one file. Activation from the Plugin Options screen is enabled. No need to edit any source files. All configuration is done through the WordPress Options screen. And best of all, once you “activate” and configure the plugin, it runs itself. You press “publish”, it crossposts. Simple as that.
The older versions are still available, but the new version can be found at: http://noumenon.roderickrussell.com/myspace-crossposter-v2-released
Cheers!
