MSN… Wow, that’s a lot of crap.

Posted by Toner under: UX .

Lately, I’ve realized that my banner blindness has gotten way out of control.  When browsing, I think I literally go into some goal-directed stupor that makes even the most egregious distractions seem as unobtrusive as a deep cut from Brian Eno’s Music for Airports. Since I get paid to stay abreast of the latest interaction design, I’ve been trying to make a more concious effort to look at the pages I visit as a whole.  So, that said I recently came across this article on Newsweek/MSNBC .

Coming from an agency background, I totally understand how ad placement and navigation can get out of hand. Once the C-level folk poke their nose, venting their concern that every single piece of content is not shown on the homepage, and the marketing director begins to panic that something is slipping below the fold, it’s usually only a short slide to a design you know will never make it into your portfolio. That said though, whatever they are building at MSNBC is like, wow, just groundbreaking in its use of clutter, random navigation elements and way, way too any ads.

Here’s a link with my detail comments.

Ads are in green (for bucks of course!). Orange are things I can’t even identify.
